We had the honor of welcoming Dr. Shariffa Carlo, an esteemed international speaker, who delivered an enlightening session on the subject of Hijab. In her talk, Dr. Shariffa discussed not just the outer garment, but the deeper spiritual and social dimensions of modesty in Islam. She outlined eight essential guidelines that define proper Islamic attire for women, emphasizing full coverage, opaque and loose-fitting fabric, and modesty in both appearance and intention. She also highlighted the importance of distinguishing Islamic dress from that of men or non-Muslim women, and avoiding adornment or fragrance in public. More than a list of rules, Dr. Shariffa’s discussion framed the Hijab as a profound expression of faith, dignity, and personal empowerment—a conscious choice to embody Islamic values in everyday life. Her words served as a timely reminder that modesty is not a limitation, but a form of spiritual strength and self-respect.
